![]() "It's just the same game with a bunch of white," I thought. I always thought Ice Climber was just another way to repackage Mario Bros. Ice Climber's biggest claim to fame for its time, however, was the ability for two players to play the game simultaneously. Fast moving platforms, icy terrain and blocks that couldn't be broken by your mallet ruled the day, and Ice Climber got excruciatingly hard in the latter stages. ![]() Popo and Nana are equipped with mallets to fend off enemies on any given mountain they're climbing, but it's usually hazards of a different variety that stymie the advance of even the most ardent of Ice Climber players. As the name of the game suggests, the idea of Ice Climber is to climb, climb, climb. The Ice Climbers, as the two starring characters are popularly known, are relentless lovers of the alpine trek, and they'll stop at nothing to climb mountain after mountain just to reach its apex, where untold valuable items can be found. But one has to travel back to the fall of 1985 to find the origin of these two arctic explorers, who first appeared in one of the launch titles on the NES, Ice Climber. Many gamers of today's generation know Popo and Nana best for their recurring role in the Super Smash Bros. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game It is still great to see them back, and not as a trophy in a dead game on a dead console.Skate or Die 2: The Search for Double Troubleīattletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate TeamĪ Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia They weren’t very like able because they were annoying. Without the Ice Climbers in Smash 4, it felt like something was missing. They haven’t changed, except for wobbling and chain grabbing, which is why they are F tier in Ultimate. Btw, I recommend you go look at a compilation of people freaking out over their reinclution into SU. Surprising everyone, in the Nintendo Direct, Nana and Popo saw the light of Smash again ( or should I say, World of Light! □ ). Oh wait, there is still another Smash game. And just like that, they were gone and forgotten. But that’s not, “Ice Climbers”, it’s “Ice Climber”. I’m sure Sakurai wanted to keep them in somehow like just keeping Popo. This caused them to be removed from the 4th gen of Smash. However, the Wii U’s older brother had worse software because it was a portable console. ![]() On the Wii U, it ran the Ice Climbers just fine. well almost nothing! What about Smash 4? I think you and I know the fate they had in Smash 4, let me explain for context. But, what else? In Brawl the only new thing they got was. Basically you have to desync Nana and start a chain grab, this carried over to Brawl where they also topped the tier list. I have to mention that Nana and Popo only was top tier in Melee because they could wobble. Annoying because every time you jumped and double jumped in Melee and Brawl, it would make the same irritating jump sound that was in the original Ice Climber. He even recognized they were random and annoying. Apparently, Sakurai states on the official Melee Japanese website, the only reason they got in was because he wanted a fighter that originated on the Famicom! Even though they debuted not on the Famicom, but in the Japanese arcades. Ice Climbers didn’t even sell all that well, in NA it sold 0.46m games. Now that I think about it, why did they get in Melee? They had one game on an outdated console, and the game wasn’t that memorable anyways. ![]()
